Geek Girl

Stumbled across a sketch I made a few years ago. Just a random cutie sporting a Green Lantern tee (before the Ryan Reynolds movie arrived and dashed any hopes of seeing another cool movie franchise from DC).

The Hollow (and my attempt at a wolf howling at the moon)

This was a logo design for a regional firearm and special tactics training facility to the west of Chicagoland. Afetr consulting with the client, we agreed to incorporate the wolf as a symbol for the majority of the services and policemen that he trains. The wolf pack. I think the finished logo came out well, and the client was very happy to see it on his marketing materials.

Happy New Year!

It’s a new year! An opportunity to make new resolutions and see how many and how much you can accomplish in the twelve months that lay ahead. I made one massive resolution last year: To reinvigorate the Cuckoo Studio and grow this into a much more active enterprise. I’m happy to say that, in large part, I accomplished this goal, and in doing so I have gained some wonderful new clients. I couldn’t hope for better people to work with, and I value the trust they’ve bestowed in this studio to make sure that their projects are handled with the utmost care.

So what lies ahead for 2013? A private resolution, for one. I hope that when the time comes I can reveal it to you. Secondly: This website will be more active. The comics might take a turn away from the tumblr page, and become a little less structured. The blog will be updated… hopefully two or three times a week. The portfolio pages will be updated as well. There have been too many projects since the last update! Oh, and I’m well aware that the last blog entry on here has been over a year ago talking about posting more. The shame is unbearable. ;-)

I hope everyone had as nice of a holiday break as I did, and you’re as geared up to make 2013 a great year for yourselves as I am for me.

Occupational Hazards

Well… Here goes nothing…

I’ve been a neglectful blogger, and I plan on remedying this as well as finishing the new comic website, so please bear with me as I do what needs to be done.

I also hope everyone had a nice holiday with their families and loved ones nearby. I had an opportunity to see my sister and her husband, in from Colorado, and my parents are doing great these days. After a week of laying around reading, snacking on holiday cookies, and recharging the creative batteries, I got back to my studio and made a decision to attack my free time with more vigor and passion.

Life is too short to stress out in a grey cubicle, right? Besides, it’s almost NYE, and there are so many resolutions to make! Make sure to visit the cuckoo studio often, and you’ll see a few of mine in action.

Happy New Year, everybody!

Where there’s He-man…

…there’s Teela. Just wanted to balance out the testosterone with another drawing. I wish I was able to show you some of the great projects I’m working on right now, but I’m sworn to secrecy. This is just a fun exercise to keep my pencil loose. Well, stylus pen I suppose. :)

He-Man going Berserk

I grew up in the 80s. Cheesy sitcoms, knee-high tube socks, feathered haircuts, Reagan, and Saturday morning cartoons. Here’s my spin on (an apparently BALCO-enhanced) He-Man.

Almost There

Wow. It’s been a long time coming, and the studio is probably about 80% ready to roll. There’s still the little issue with the sub-site that will be presenting the new comic strips. I’m primarily a print and pre-press oriented designer, so I’m having a tough time deciding what to do with this page. If you look at certain web comics, they tend to be extremely cluttered with all kinds of excessive elements scattered around the page. The themes available for these sites are also somewhat limited. I’d like to present the strip in two varying sizes – a “weekly” format, like what you’d find in your local newspaper, and a Sunday-sized strip. Here’s where it gets interesting.

I’m not limited by size limitations here. There are some wild examples of side-scrolling websites too. And while those are pretty cool from a novelty standpoint, I think the lack of a side scrolling button on most mice might kill the return traffic. If I decided to draw a comic that was 20 feet high and required you to scroll for hours just to get to the end, I could.

But I’m not Jack Kerouac, and this ain’t On the Road.

So while I work on figuring out how to go about this stuff, I hope you enjoy looking around at the galleries and, whatever you do, don’t forget to bookmark us! There’s a lot to come!
